So here we have it.. the list they all said would conquer all at AoS 2.0..
Hopefully I can point you in the direction of why it’s great, and also, why you shouldn’t fear it when you come up against it.
The lovely, line of sight blocking, killy wood of magic.
Whilst you’ll get a good idea of how they work on this site, I’ll focus on their utilisation within this list.
The unfortunately reality of this list is they you are short on bodies. You need to be flexible when the Alphastrike isn’t as killy as you would like and you are trying to respond to your opponent. So you need these woods to jump around the board and get the Alphastrike repositioned
Artefacts, Command Traits & Abilities
Durthu has the mighty Ghrrstrike (and I want to see those conversions people, it’s a more killy weapon of death) and this really helps with his reliability. Hitting and wounding 2s? 6 damage? Hell yes.
Branchwraith has the Acorn of the Ages. This allows a drop of a wood in the hero phase, and is really important for the mobility of the list. Also, your big killy tree of death (Durthu) gets more attacks near the woods, so you are getting a lot more options for position early game.
There’s not a huge amount of alternatives in this list, you only have two characters that can hold items after all. Durthu could take something to make him more survivable, but I feel it makes him less dangerous and this list is all about the chopping. My only change is Ranu’s Lamentri for the branchwraith. This gives her plusses to cast, handy for the dryads spell, but with the extra dispell range, getting woods down isn’t reliable enough just by spells.
Alariele has the ability make everything reroll wounds for A WHOLE BATTLEROUND. This is a list that kills stuff and asks questions later, so timing the pop of this is crucial. If you get in a good position turn one, don’t be scared to do it!
I’ve gone with gnarled warrior here, which makes Durthu ignore Rend 1. There’s lots of it about, and now we have a change to mystic shield it’s even better. So protection is important!
She’s at the top of the list here for a reason, She can eat a load of stuff and can demoralise an opponent quickly. She can destroy a infantry unit with her shooting attack, and she’s suprisingly killy in combat, and she comes into her own with the battalion ability, which I’ll let to later.
She’s here to pump out the dryads. Spoiler alert, your troop choices in this list are Deadwood (geddit!) So you need more bodies. She hides in woods and brings some dudes to the fight.
Spirit of Durthu.
Big Papa Bear is here to kick ass and take names. He’s attacking 3 times at 2+ to hit and wound, and undamaged he’s doing 6 damage at rend -2. Put him near a wood and he adds on some more attacks. Plus he has a ranged attack which isn’t shabby, and if you get him hopping round the board he’s eating things. My last outing, that was 30 blood letters, Lord of Khorne and a bloodthirster. And he was still going end of turn 5. He’s eaten 4 Megaboss in one game. And it’s a kick-ass model with a huge sword.
Muma Tree. She’s in the list as she’s mobile, she can benefit from the extra movement from Dreadwood and she’s got a once a game auto summoning ability which you can choose from some Dryads, some Kurnoth Hunters or a treeman. You can bring some more Spite Revenants down if you feel like watching the world burn. She hits really hard, has a small chance to auto kill a model with the touch of her hand, and she heals everything. And a cheeky long range missile attack that can snipe a cheap small hero.
These guys are cheap, die quickly and are the price you pay for running the Dreadwood Battalion. You have to run 4 units. I have them on my objectives, and hope I kill enough so they don’t die!
Nothing to see here!
It’s worth noting that others do try and use this slot for something which assists with the Alphastrike, such as a Celestant Prime. I heart Durthu too much to make room for anything.
