There are no 1 way to use Fyrerslayers runes! Use what ever you feel is best for the situation.
It is important that you “DO NOT” plan on getting an enchanted effect on a rune. Many people play the runes and hope for the enchanted effect and lose if they don’t get it. Of course if you are in a situation and you will lose unless you get 4″ more to charge then of course go for it. But I have to state that you must likely will not get the effect and therefore planning a game on that will be a mad plan!
The overall effect of the runes are listed down under. Note that I have “NOT” copy pasted it so this is the short way to see what they do.
All the runes ONLY effect “Friendly Fyrerslayers”.
Rune of fury: Reroll hit rolls of 1 in the combat phase.
Enchanted: Add 1 to attack characteristic of melee weapons.
Rune of Searing Heat: Add 1 to damage characteristic for melee and missile weapons if the wound roll is 6+.
Enchanted: Enemy units within 3″ of friendly fyrerslayers units in the hero phase take 1 mortal wound.
Rune of Awakened: Improve 1 rend to all melee attacks for friendly fyrerslayers.
Enchanted: Improve 1 rend more.
Rune of Fiery Determination: Friendly Fyrerslayers do not have to take battleshock.
Enchanted: Friendly Fyrerslayers models that are killed in the combat phase are not removes until the end of the phase and can therefor attack and pile as normal.
Rune of Relentless Zeal: Add 4 to movement for Friendly Fyrerslayers.
Enchanted: Add 4 to charge.
Rune of Farsight: Add 8 to range characteristic of Fyresteel Throwing Axes.
Enchanted: Reroll hit rolls of 1 for Fyresteel Throwing Axes.
Artefacts, Command Traits & Abilities
Runefather on Magmadroth
Doppelganger Cloak: Runefather on Magmadroth is not as tanky as he looks. With a 4+ Save he can get killed fast but with Doppelganger Cloak you can get him into fights that let him attack enemy units without letting them attack back. Really a strong item to keep someone safe!
Steadfast Advance: This Command ability is good because it let the Runefather on Magmadroth give a safe to a unit that is to far away from the battlesmith. It also help HB not to lose models to Battleshock.
Dimensional Blade: A Grimwrath Berzerker is a BEAST for 80 point!!! 4 attacks 3 to hit and 3 to wound let him get most attack in.. he can even get reroll from runes and the runesmitter. So with a -3 rend he will turn Characters like Alarielle into a 6+ save… good look! and if you wanna go even further Rune of Awakened give him a rend of -4 maybe even -5….. WOW that is a hero killer right there! And he is a tank in close combat! You can give him Ghystrike instead but then he is better at killing units with a 4-5 save.
Runefather on Magmadroth: He is here so that we can get HB as battleline and have the Lords of Lodge battalion. But other then that he works well in this combo because of Doppelganger Cloak. He can be used to hold the enemys strong units in place without letting them deal with him other then in there hero and shooting phase.
Runemaster: This model is super bad and the ONLY reason he is in the list is that he is needed in Lords of Lodge. But now that he is here what does he do and what can we use him for?
1. When setup is done you let the enemy pick one of his units that get reroll wound rolls of 1…. So he start with buffing the enemy… This is bad until he gets with in 10″ of that unit because that give every model in the list +1 attack characteristics against that unit. But he will most likely be killed before he get there and there for only giving the enemy a buff…
2. He can do 1 good thing. He can turn terrain against the enemy by picking a terrain within 20″ and make every model within 1″ or on the terrain roll a dice. For each 6 that is a mortal wound. In addition until your next hero phase every “model” that makes a run or charge move across or finishing on this terrain roll a dice and on a 1 that “model” is dead! That can kill ANY model. So if Nagash runs or charge over this and rolls a 1 then he is slain! That ability can be very strong some times.
Runesmiter: I have 2 runesmiters because 1 will deepstrike with a unit of HB and the other will deepstrike with Runefather on Magmadroth. So now there are 3 hero’s the enemy have to kill if he wanna get them to a 6+ after save. And of cause a runesmiter can give a unit reroll wound rolls! give that to a unit of HB or maybe Grimwrath or Runefather on Magmadroth is a nice little bonus!
Battlesmith: Everyone within 8″ get reroll saverolls.. Do even have to explain how good that is! And of cause he is 1 of the 3 hero’s in Lords of Lodge that give a better chance to get dobble turn.
Grimwrath Berzerker: As I have already said he is a super good model for 80 point! And I have given him a -3 rend item so he can be a great hero killer. He wanna be as close to as many enemy units as he can. That is all there is to say about him!
Hearthguard Berzerker: This unit can hit very hard while still being super tanky do to the 4+ aftersave. I am giving the 2×30 man units Flamestrike Poleaxe because of the mortal wounds it can do. With Rune of Fury every Fyrerslayer in the army can get reroll hitrolls of 1. That Rune combined with Flamestrike Poleaxe let them only fail on a 2.
When playing with Hearthguard Berzerkers always keep them close to a Fyrerslayers hero. With -1 to hit a heros near a unit with 3 or more models make sure you keep the heros close to any of the HB units.
Lords of the Lodge: There are 2 great things this battalion do.
1. Hot Blooded Fury: This ability give +1 to the turn roll for “each” hero on the table that is in this battalion. So we have the Runemaster, Battlesmith and Runefather on Magmadroth it will give +3 to the turn roll. This will give us a chance to plan our game on a double turn. Of course it can still fail but atleast with +3 there is a very good chance we get the double turn!
2. Oathbound Guardians: With the Hot Blooded Fury ability the tactic can be more towards a double turn and the setup for it. This is where Oathbound Guardians really come in. What this ability does is that 1 unit of Hearthguard Berzerkers get to pile in and attack 2 times in the combat phase if that unit is within 6″ of a hero from the Lords of the Lodge battalion. This work perfect with the 2 Runesmiters and that they will deepstrike with a Runefather and a unit of 30 Hearthguard Berzerkers.
In this list there are no allies.
Magic, Endless & Realm Spells
There are no magic in this list. At the moment I think it works fine without any magic casters or anyone to unbind. It would be nice to have a Runelord but since GHB18 Fyrerslayers heros are to expensive in my mind to take in a Runelord in a list like this.
This list makes the enemy very afraid of a deepstrike. Us that fear he shows in his setup.
This list can force fights and hold him away from objectives that you hold you along time. It also have the option to just keep the Runesmiters of board until end of turn 2 and just rush in and take the HB/Double turn combo combined with hammer and anvil tactic. This works were well since HB can be both Hammer and Anvil!
I will state that the Runes in this army are very strong and important to know how to use! It can make or brake a game using the Runes!
Lists that can take objectives fast are must likely not very strong against mortal wounds. Sylvaneth will be all over the table but once this list get close to them it will BRAKE them.
Of course there are DoK lists that make tons of damage while being as tanky if not more tanky then a Fyrerslayer. Those matchups can be very hard and if facing a list like that try focus on objectives.
