Introduction

in this series i attempt to use math to find which units are most efficient. The rules and limits I impose on units and the math are as follows:

  1. only 1 command ability allowed
  2. cost of battalions and buff units are not included in the calculations for efficiency
  3. when there are random values I use the average roll
  4. I round to the nearest 2 decimal places
  5. effective wounds are calculated with this formula: (wounds per model/chance to fail a saving throw). this number is not accurate against attacks that deal multiple damage
  6. 5+/5++ denotes a 5+ save with a 5+ ignore damage save (such as deathless minions)
  7. I do not take into account abilities that trigger on rolls of 6+.

Units That Synergise With It

-Astrolith bearer (allows to reroll failed hits, including the solar engine)

Skink Priest (allows reolls of failed saves)

-Thunderquake battalion (allows rerolls of all failed wounds and saves when choosing ‘savage’)

How to Use the Unit in Game

the bastiladon clocks in at 280 points and is the only seraphon unit with a native save against mortal wounds. It also completely ignores rend. in this situation i did not take into account the ark of sotek because its damage is dependant on how many targets are around (but will deal an average of 2 mortal wounds per target)

so lets dive into the numbers:

unbuffed vs a 3+ save unit:

searing beam deals 2.31 damage

javelins deal 0.22 damage

tail deals 1.31 damage

so you pay 72.92 points per damage

unbuffed vs a 5+/5++ unit

searing beam: 2.53

javelins: 0.29

tail: 1.43

which is 65.88 points per damage

now lets look at my favorite dinosaur when fully buffed:

vs 3+ save

searing beam: 3.47

javelins: 0.29

tail: 2.32

which comes out to 46.05 points per damage

against a 5+/5++ unit:

searing beam: 3.8

javelins: 0.38

tail: 2.55

or 41.6 points per damage.

now lets look at defenses against attacks that deal 1 damage (remember its ignores all rend and has a 4+ ignore damage save against mortal wounds)

unbuffed: 24.24 effective wounds against attacks (11.55 points per effective wound) and 16 effective wounds against mortal wounds (17.5 points per effective wound)

buffed: 66.67 effective wounds against attacks (which comes out to 4.2 points per effective wound), same 16 effective wounds against mortal wounds.
