Our New ‘The Old World’ Format

Hey everyone, Rob here!

I’m really excited to share a new project we’ve been working hard on.

We all know how important it is to get new players into The Old World, but there are some real barriers to entry. Asking someone to spend hundreds of pounds on an army—and then spend dozens of hours painting and assembling it—can be overwhelming. On top of that, the mental load of large-scale battles with tons of units can be a lot for a beginner.

That’s why we’ve put together a concise and simple mission pack—designed specifically for events and new players.

Why 500-point battles?

  • They’re a great way to learn the core mechanics of the game.
  • You can get multiple games in a single evening or at an event, giving you more reps and quicker understanding of the game phases.
  • They give more opportunities to experience weird rules interactions in a low-stakes setting.

What’s in the pack?

  • List-building guidelines
  • Victory condition breakdown
  • 3 easy-to-follow missions
  • 9 terrain layouts using our T.P.S. (Terrain Picking System)
  • A guide to terrain rules

You’ll also be able to buy a physical version of the mission cards from us!

Events at the tSN Arena

We’re also running some one-day events at the tSN Arena in Nottingham, designed to help people break into small-scale gaming. If you’re curious, follow the link and come play!

Terrain That Works

Down the line, we’ll be releasing our own terrain line. There’s already a lot of great terrain out there, but we wanted something that looks amazing, is functional for The Old World, and fits our needs perfectly. Here’s a sneak peek at our first three designs:

Hill

Hills are a staple in rank-and-flank games, but they’re often impractical—models slide off or trays don’t sit flat. Our hill features a flat, stable top, and the upper part can be removed to reveal a flat base underneath—great for precise measurements.

Forest

Most gaming forests are either train-set leftovers or barren trunks. We wanted something better. Our forest set is visually striking and functional—with pre-drilled holes and magnets so each tree is removable. You get the look you want without sacrificing gameplay.

Camps

We always found it odd that battlefields often feature random buildings. In reality, warcamps make much more sense out in the field. So we’ve designed modular camps that can be used on their own or combined into a larger warcamp. Plus, thanks to magnetic connectors, you can detach parts and use them for skirmish games too.

Let us know what you think—and we can’t wait to see you try out this new format!
